are balance bikes better?

Learning to ride a bike is a major milestone and core memory for us as parents. The way children learn can shape their confidence, coordination, and independence.
Balance Bike or Training Wheels?
As a paediatric physiotherapist I have clearly seen the benefits of the balance bike as they’ve become more popular in recent years.
Recent studies have confirmed this too - comparing and highlighting the unique advantages of balance bikes.
What the Research Shows
A 2022 study in the British Journal of Developmental Psychology found that children who practised with balance bikes:
Began cycling practice at a younger age
Reached independent riding earlier than those using training wheels
Developed stronger balance and steering control
Although they became independent sooner, the total practice time was similar between groups. This suggests balance bikes don’t speed things up but supporting more effective skill development from a younger age.
A 2024 study in the Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology helps explain why. Using motion sensors, researchers found that balance bikes promote greater movement adaptability - children adjust naturally to balance demands, building flexible and coordinated motor patterns that make the transition to pedal bikes smoother.
Why It Matters
Balance bikes encourage
Earlier independence
Better postural control and coordination
Confidence through self-paced learning
These outcomes align with the modern, evidenced principles of motor development and cognitive learning.
Takeaway
When you're looking for their first bike go for a a balance bike! They should be able to start sooner, be more confident, gain better balance skills, and it will also be easier and more enjoyable for you to support them.
Here are some of my favourite balance bikes - with sizes and budgets to suit all. In time for Christmas!
A note for developmental needs
If your little one has extra needs, like developmental delay, cerebral palsy, sensory or vision differences - trikes and pedal bikes can sometimes be a better option. Chat to your paediatric physio about your child's needs if you need help.
There are also specialist options and a few places that you can try these specialist bikes first - and possibly charity funding support too.
As always, if you have a topic you would like me to cover, please send me an email or instagram DM. Chances are, others are asking your question too!
